The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) is the premiere fall regatta in the US, if not the world.  It is the world’s largest 2-day rowing event, attracting over 400,000 spectators and 11,000 athletes, and is considered the “Boston Marathon” of the rowing world.  It is also one of the most difficult courses to race.  The course is 3 miles (4800 meters) in length, and requires the coxswain to navigate the river’s many turns and it’s 6 bridges.  The start is at Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse, and ends just past the Elliot Bridge and before Northeastern University’s Henderson Boathouse.  Entries for the HOCR are determined by placement in the previous year’s regatta, and then by lottery to fill out each event.
