2020 Summer Youth Programs

Greater Lawrence Rowing offers numerous youth programs for middle school, high school and college aged individuals throughout the summer.  See our offerings below:

Beginner Middle School Rowing
This program is for those in grades 7-8 who want to get introduced to the sport of rowing, continue to build on their beginner experience or want to row as an 8th grader without committing to the 5 day a week training schedule.  There is no experience necessary to join.  This is a great way to learn how to row in a no pressure, fun environment.  Come learn the sport of rowing or further your experience in this fun beginner program!

A swim test is required for those that don’t already have one on file.  The swim test form can be found here.

Practice: Mondays & Wednesdays 3:30-5:00

Fee: $275 (includes registration & equipment fees)

Intermediate Middle School Rowing

This program is for those in grades 7-8 who have completed a learn to row program, wants to continue to build on their beginner experience, or wants to row as an 8th grader without committing to the 5 day a week competitive training schedule. Athletes interested in this program must have completed at least one on-the-water learn to row program. The focus will be on improving the rowing stroke, building strength and fitness, and potentially explore sculling. This is a great way to improve your rowing in a no pressure, fun environment.  Come learn the sport of rowing or further your experience in this fun intermediate program!

Practice: Tuesdays & Thursdays 3:30-5:00pm

Fee: $275 (includes registration & equipment fees)

Junior Learn to Scull

This program is for those who have no experience sculling and have completed at least one competitive rowing season.  In this program you will start from the beginning in a sculling boat and build on skills to get to a comfortable level using a quad, doubles, recreational and possibly racing singles.

*There is a strict 10 participant cap on this program*

Practice: Monday & Wednesday 3:30-5:00pm

Fee: $200 (includes registration & equipment fees)

U19 Competitive Rowing

The Junior Competitive program is for competitive and committed athletes who will remain under the age of 19 in the 2019 calendar year. The program is open to competitive athletes with at least two consecutive seasons of competitive rowing at the high school level. The group will train on the water four times a week and will have four additional coached land practices. The afternoon sessions will be optional, but highly encouraged. Athletes will be required to complete additional land workouts and meters on the erg outside of on-the-water practice time. Athletes in this program will have access to the boathouse equipment during operational hours (Saturday-Saturday 8:00am-8:00pm). Athletes in the program will develop their rowing technique, build and increase strength and fitness, and will race in competitive lineups. It is the expectation that athletes will arrive to the first day of practice with a strong base fitness.

The team will compete at several local regattas in New England and Philadelphia with the potential to travel to the Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catherine’s Ontario if there is competitive interest. Athletes will be responsible for their own transportation and housing for any travel races, but race fees are included in tuition. Athletes will need a valid passport.

U23 Competitive Rowing

The program is open to competitive athletes with collegiate rowing experience. The group will train on the water four times a week and will have four additional coached land practices. The afternoon sessions will be optional, but highly encouraged. Athletes will be required to complete additional land workouts and meters on the erg outside of the on-the-water practices. Athletes in this program will have access to boathouse equipment during operational hours (Saturday-Saturday 8am-8pm) and will have the option to complete their captain’s test for the logbook sculling program (fee included in tuition).

Small Boats Training

The Small Boats Training group will focus on on-the-water training in small boats. Athletes will practice primarily in singles, doubles, pairs, and quads. Sculling experience, at least one season of competitive rowing experience, and confidence rowing in small boats is required for this program. Practice will focus on developing the technique of the rowing stroke and maintaining fitness. Improve your boat feel this summer by rowing in small boats!

All athletes enrolled in this program are welcome to attend an optional fitness training land practice every Friday from 8:00-10:00am.

Junior Development Camp

All local experienced rowers are welcome to join!  The Junior Development Camp is for experienced athletes who wish to improve their rowing technique, maintain physical fitness, and row non-competitively over the summer. This program is for rowers rising into grades 9-12 who have rowed for at least one racing season for a competitive rowing program. The program will practice on the water or indoors four days a week. Practice will focus on developing the rowing stroke, rowing in mixed lineups, small boats practice, and staying in shape for the fall season.

All athletes enrolled in this program are welcome to attend an optional fitness training land practice every Friday from 8:00-10:00am.

Youth Learn to Row

This program is for all local students ages 12-18 who have no prior experience or no competitive rowing experience.  Rowers will get an introduction to rowing, or a continuation of their experience, using both rowing machines and on the water time to learn proper rowing technique, safety, equipment use and fitness.  By the end of the 4 week session, participants will have a basic knowledge of rowing and the fundamentals of how to row together as a boat.
